Plaza Lanes was originally built in 1956 by Bob Lehman. Betty and Ray Blackburn owned the establishment from 1956 until May of 1964 when Kenny and Florence Evans and Harold and Lucille "Sike" Rhoad bought it out of bankruptcy. The following May the Rhoads bought out the Evans family. The Rhoad family initially purchased the bowling center because they wanted to own their own business, regardless of the fact that they didn't even know how to keep score. Harold and Sike became interested in bowling through a couples league at Sandusky, Ohio's Cedar Lanes.

Being mechanically inclined, Harold taught himself how to work on the Old Buildingmachines and to drill bowling balls. They also sold bowling equipment from behind the counter.  The bowling center was completely remodeled in 1978.  New machines were installed with under lane ball returns, a pro-shop was added and a new bar. In 1981 the business was incorporated and the couple’s sons, Roger and Charles began to take ownership.  There were many new features added over the years. In 1993 automatic scoring replaced the telescores and ended manual scoring, in 1996 bumpers were added to the lanes and in 1997 Thunder Alley was introduced.  In 1996 Charles sold his portion of the business to Roger in order for he and his wife to move to Las Vegas to deal black jack. In 2001 synthetic lanes were installed and the scores shot through the roof.  Bowlers were smiling again. The bar was renovated in 2005 and added a branch of the Sandusky-based Cameo Pizza.

March 19, 2008 marked the end of an era. At 1:30 in the morning, firefighters were called to the bowling alley only to see the business completely engulfed in flames. Clyde, Green Springs, Sandusky Township and Ballville firefighters doused the fire with over 200,000 gallons of water. The Rhoad family was left with an estimated $2 million in damage. After overwhelming support from the community the Rhoads made the announcement that they would be rebuilding a new, larger facility in July of 2008. The new building was finally finished and re-opened on August 13, 2009.
